Safety Suggestions

  • All flags, signs and banners must be affixed on the inside of overpasses.
  • All materials attached to overpasses should be able to withstand harsh weather conditions (high winds, rain, sleet and snow)
  • Banners, signs and flags should be attached using wire or electrical ties or other materials able to hold these to the bridge and not become detached.
  • When hanging a banner or display always empty your pockets of all items including coins, cell phones and anything else that could fall below causing injury to others.
  • Always make sure you're safe from oncoming traffic. Only the side with a sidewalk should be used.
  • When using scissors, clippers or other tools secure them with a string taped to the handle and have the other end tied to your belt loop or wrist so if the item was dropped it would not fall below the bridge
  • Always check your display often especially after severe weather.
  • Always remove your banners and signs promptly.  Banners or signs should be removed  within 2 weeks of them being placed on an bridge overpass.
  • Make sure your display is not obstructing traffics signs or passage ways.
  • Make your display attractive as nothing is worse than looking at  a mess on a bridge.
  • Make sure you comply with local, state and federal guidelines and regulations regarding items affixed on bridges.
  • If you are going to affix a sign, banner or flags on a bridge overpass, register your name and phone number and where your display is located on our web site.  If any issues arise we will try to  contact you.  See tab Register Your Display
  • Stopping on a highway is reserved for emergencies only.  Taking pictures of your banner or sign or display should be done with extreme caution.  If you do need to pull over, pull off the breakdown lane and park the farthest over as possible to the side of the road.  Take the pictures from inside your vehicles as getting out is extremely dangerous.
  • Place all small flags and electrical ties or wire in a bucket when affixing flags or banners on a bridge.  This will reduce the chances of any of the items falling on the sidewalk.
  • Replace your flags every 3 months or as needed to keep them clean and fresh.
  • If using a ladder be sure to have someone with you to hold the ladder in place.  Remember, you are dealing with drivers talking on cells phones so have this person be your lookout as well.
  • When leaving the bridge be sure to take everything with you and pick up wrappers, cut wire or electrical ties. Pick up other things such as rocks that may be a hazard if noticed.
  • If you see any major hazards with the structural integrity of any bridge overpass contact MassHighway (Massachusetts only) or your state highway department if in another state.
  • Banners need to be 5' or less in width and no more than 5' in height in order to fit between the fence post on a bridge.  Letters on these banners need to be large enough to be seen 50' or more.  Vinyl with grommets is preferable as it is more durable and easier to hang and take down than other materials.  Remember, banners should be removed within 2 weeks.
  • When placing a small flag with a stick handle, be sure the flag is held securely against the fence until the flag is fastened tightly.
  • When removing any part of the display be sure that when cutting wire or electrical ties that you do not drop any of the cuttings.  Make sure you have a good grasp of what is being cut and taken down.

Disclaimer:  Safely securing banners and flags to bridge overpasses requires a full commitment, common sense and extraordinary safety precautions. Education on safety awareness issues is most important when considering affixing banners or flags on bridge overpasses and it is your responsibility to obtain as much information as needed to ensure that the display is properly secured on the bridge.

Shortly, we will have pictures demonstrating safety methods used on the banners, signs and displays.
